Musicality/Drum Solo Workshop With Zoe Jakes & Faisel Zedan
As dancers, we are the visual representation of the music to which we choose to dance. Dancing to live music, however, is an entirely different ball of wax! It can be spontaneous, exhilarating, and sometimes even intimidating and scary. Finally, we have a belly dance workshop on musicality and dancing to live music… taught by some of the hottest names in the biz! In this workshop, we will engage in the dialogue between musicians and dancers, learning from both perspectives in order to deepen our comfort level, dance repertoire, and ease of musicality. We will learn basic rhythms and music patterns, as well as practice the art of conversation and collaboration between musicians and dancers, all in the context of the delightful (and sometimes intimidating) drum solo. *This workshop is a very special experience to experience Zoe’s unique take on the tribal drum solo; as well as get to learn from the musician’s point of view, immerse in the collaborative process of LIVE music and dance, and dance with one of the leading drummers in the SF music and dance scene, helping to shape the sounds of tribal fusion world-wide.

10:30 am – 12:30 pm — Modern Fusion & Movement Invention for Bellydance with Cera Byer
This workshop is all about destroying boundaries, incorporating gestural movement, and working contemporary staging, costuming, and choreographic techniques into your Belly dance vocabulary. Our warm up will focus on developing movements that start in Belly dance and then take a sharp left, exploring space and growing outward from the center. Then we'll move into modern fusion combos, and begin to develop our own movements that we can use in creating combos and choreographies. Come away challenged, inspired, and with lots to work on at home.
12:30 pm - 2:30 pm — Additional "Choreographer's Module" With Cera Byer
In this module we delve into aspects of Space, Force, and Time when working on developing choreography for a group. Stagecraft, the unexpected, meanings and impressions associated with blocking, theatrical dynamic composition, repetition, variation, and development - these are the tools that can take your work from being unison girls dancing in formation to telling a story or creating an atmosphere that leaves your audience breathless.
2:30 pm - 3:30 pm — Lunch Break
3:30 pm - 5:30 pm — Costuming, Aesthetic & Creative Process Laboratory with Lee Kobus
How do we more fully tell a story, and create that atmosphere that leaves your audience breathless that Cera address in her above workshop? Add costuming, aesthetic, and guidance as to how to create the full package for stage. Please join legendary SF artist and designer (and former Ultra Gypsy dancer), Lee Kobus, for this hands-on laboratory, focusing on concepts for costume development and stage. You will have the opportunity to directly apply the information to your own works in progress, as well as expore hands-on exercises and work to inspire your own creative process. A future “request list” will be sent out to its participants in order to create a balance of “information - in” and “action - out” for this module.

This workshop is all about polishing your presentation for the experienced dancer. Entrances and exits, creating a story line, intention, motif, and emotional connection are essential for advanced dancers regardless if you are performing in a small intimate setting or on a large stage. Kami will share some of her experiences and ideas about how to create a performance set that is unique to your own voice.
2:00 pm - 3:00 pm — Lunch Break
3:00 pm - 4:30 pm — Dance Therapeutics: Saving Your Belly Dance Body
As dancers, our body is our vehicle of artistic expression. How can we best care for our bodies, prevent injuries, rehab current injuries and/or increase body awareness and control to more fully embody our art form to optimal potential? Drawing from Yoga Therapy, Traditional Thai-Yoga Massage, Feldenkrais, and Deb’s personal “stash” compiled from over 12 years in the field of mind-body medicine and both Eastern & Western healing arts, this therapeutic sequence will focus on releasing and aligning low back, hips, and spine after 6 full days of dancing, as well as addressing common belly dance injuries, and some basic belly dance experiential anatomy. A necessary foundation for any level dancer, of any style belly dance, and a great augmentation for dance teachers to integrate into their classes.
